What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is a disorder characterized by brief interruptions of
breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea causes a person
to stop breathing while sleeping sometimes as many
as 200 to 500 times during the course of a night.
Each time breathing stops, the body’s major organs
are deprived of oxygen and there is a rise in carbon
dioxide. During the time that the body is not
breathing, sometimes as long as 90 seconds, blood
pressure rises sharply and the heart slows down,
skips beats or may even stop for a few seconds.
The Lung Center, PC
specializes in sleep apnea disorders and treatments.
